I started The Noir Pencil in 2016 because I believed that good writing deserves good editing, and that every writer deserves an editor who actually reads what they write.
I studied English Literature and Grammar, and I brought that background with me into every document I have ever touched.
The Noir Pencil is a solo operation, and that is intentional. When you send your document here, I am the one reading it. I am the one making every edit. I am the one leaving every note.
There is no team, no junior editor, no automated pass. Just careful, personal attention to every page you send.
That is not a limitation. That is the promise.
The Noir Pencil is founded by a Black woman and built to serve every writer who walks through the door. That means writers who have been writing for decades and writers who are sharing their words for the first time. Writers working in their first language and writers working in their second or third.
Students working on personal statements. Professionals finalizing reports. Authors shaping their first manuscript. ESL writers putting their ideas into English for the first time. All of them welcome here.
Come as you are. Bring your draft, your questions, your uncertainty. My job is to meet your writing where it is and help it become what you meant for it to be.
Editing is not about correcting writers. It is about helping writing connect.
When a document is edited well, the reader never notices the editor. They just notice that the writing is clear, that the ideas land, that it sounds exactly like the person who wrote it.
That is what I am here to do. Help your writing sound more like you at your best.
When you are ready, send your document. I will take it from there.
